As far as his career is concerned, he began his journey in 1965 when he joined Loyola Marymount, where he started playing basketball at the amateur level. He played with them until 1970, and he did very well in the three seasons he played. Rick later moved on to several teams, including the Portland Trail Blazers, Chicago Bulls, New Orleans Jazz, and Kansas City-Omaha Kings. He announced his retirement from professional basketball in 1975.

Later, in 1977, he moved on to basketball coaching with Chemeketa CC. He worked there until 1983, and later he moved to the Portland Trail Blazers, where he worked until 1989. Rick later worked with a few other teams, including serving as the head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings, Houston Rockets, and Minnesota Timberwolves.
